I conceived this work from the idea of a woman warrior, not a saint. A woman’s ability to fight is vastly superior to that of a man, and the energy expended by Joan in pursuit of her ideal, led her to memorable feats and to the acceptance of martyrdom with the certainty that she had fully carried out her mission.
The sword is the object of meditation, the unvanquished mirror reflects her shining and piercing soul. The divine light illuminates the absorbed but not discouraged face of this great heroine.
