Thinking about poetry, in my mind, I came across the poetess Sappho.
Inspired by this woman of sublime, gentle soul and disturbing fantasies, I tried to retrace the last moments of her life before the final decision.
Distraught over lost love, as her partner had left her to marry a man, she composes the last verses, a fragment of which I have brought back to the canvas. The question, which is encapsulated completely in the facial expression and the almost huddled body, is why such a cruel fate was reserved for her. The flight from the cliff, to throw herself into the cold waters of the Aegean, is the escape from so much pain.
